Narcissism vs Self Love
What does the term narcissist/narcissism mean to you? In modern, everyday use, when we refer to narcissism we are referring to someone who is arrogant, self absorbed or haughty. This person usually has no empathy and cares little for others. Narcissism should not be confused with the term self love. Self love, which we talk about here on this site and in the Bliss Coaching Program, is defined as the ability to have a healthy love and self respect for oneself. This type of self love doesn't preclude the ability to love others, but allows one to connect more with the world and experience a richer, more fulfilling life. Here are six common traits of narcissism/narcissist individuals:
According to the Mayo Clinic narcissistic personality disorder is defined as: “Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultra confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism." "A narcissistic personality disorder causes problems in many areas of life, such as relationships, work, school or financial affairs. You may be generally unhappy and disappointed when you're not given the special favors or admiration you believe you deserve. Others may not enjoy being around you, and you may find your relationships unfulfilling.” Do you know someone like this? Or have you dated a narcissist? What was the experience like? I know from personal experience how dreadful this can be! One of the sad consequences of being in a relationship with a narcissist is they must strip you of any self esteem in order to feel they are #1. It takes time to reclaim your true self, but it is so worth it. This is why self love is so important in healing these types of wounds and helping you find your way back to your true authentic self. You can reclaim the joy of a healthy, happy balanced life again. If you haven’t left yet, know that healing takes time, but YOU can feel whole again. If you have already left, congratulations for coming out the other side in this difficult experience. I’d love to discuss this topic with you further.
