Creating a work-life balance can be tough! It is very hard to find the delicate balance between a happy work life and happy home life. Today I would like to share a few things that you should do both at work and at home to create a more balanced, rewarding life. But first, do you realize how important this really is? It’s actually a very important, but often overlooked topic. Lately it has been covered by groups like Mental Health America, Web M.D., Forbes, and Business News Daily. So instead of you searching all over the Internet to try and find some advice, I thought I would share five easy tips that you can use today to begin creating a more balanced life, both at home and at work.
But Routines aren’t just for work. A routine allows everyone to know what’s going on and when. However, sometimes you need downtime too. Don’t be afraid to allow yourself and your family some downtime, you need to make this a routine too. You can even put it on the calendar. Scheduling in downtime for you and your family is a great way to make sure you all are able to relax.
If your company doesn't have a telecommuting systems in place, perhaps you can ask about starting one.
It is also important to learn how to say no to social events. When home life events are too taxing or when work is requiring more from you, you need to be able to say no. Maybe you have social obligations that are just too draining, or don’t allow you enough time with your family in the evenings. Cutting these extra demands out will help you find balance. If you have children, learn their school's policies too. Knowing the procedure for turning in sick notes, calling out for the day, or showing up late. Learn who and where you can pick up your child if they become ill at school now, before it is needed.
At home, communication is essential. This is even more important if you have a partner and/or children at home. Make sure you are sharing with everyone any special projects, your upcoming plans and generally what is going on with you. In addition, you need to know what is going on with everyone else. Make it a point to check in with everyone in your household regularly, It’s also a good idea to set a weekly family meeting to discuss upcoming events, stress points, things that may need planning and other elements of life that could cause stress. Communication is key in making a business trip or family vacation go from chaotic to smooth. These simple steps will help you find balance in your busy life, no matter how chaotic life becomes.
